On a rainy Thursday morning on the 26th October 2017, close to 50 professionals representing more than 20 companies attended the Singapore BIM Seminar at JW Marriot Hotel co-organised by Turner & Townsend and Aries Geomatics. Turner & Townsend is a renowned professional services company trusted to drive better business outcomes for clients across all sectors with BIM. On the other hand, Aries Geomatics is a market-leading 3D Laser Scanning services company with expertise in scan-to-BIM. Together, the seminar is organised with the aim to actively engage our guests on the advantages of how BIM can benefit their organisations.
Next up is the lecture by Harry Peh from Aries Geomatics on scan-to-BIM. 3D Laser Scanning is well known for supporting the application of BIM; so to spice things up, we did a live demonstration of the hardware as well as analysing its subsequent outputs. With the 3D point cloud data from the 3D Laser Scanner, we are able to convert as-built buldings into 3D models by programmes such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit. This allows the existing structure or building to be converted into an as-built model. Once the as-built 3D models are integrated seamlessly into the BIM workflow, professionals involved in the project can build up the model with the right information for effective collaboration. Clients will then be able to reap the cost savings rewards managed by BIM.
While breakfast was being served, Miss Laurice Peverett from Turner & Townsend is up first to talk about the why, what and how of BIM. With the continual revisions of the regulations passed by the Building & Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA), you have to be constantly on your toes in case of contravention of the rules. That is why finding a trusted partner that is committed to open and transparent communications is the key to succeeding in any BIM projects. Some time was dedicated to explaining the confusing jargons like Level of Development (LOD), Level of Detail (LoD), Level of Information (LOI) as well as the progression from 3D, 4D, 5D and all the way to 6D. Coupled with technologically advanced software and a group of experienced team, implementing the whole range of BIM capabilities never looked so simple before.
Last but not least, we had a bustling Q & A session before officially ending off this rewarding event. A big Thank You to those who spare time to attend and a special Thank You to our co-organisers Turner & Townsend!
